New IWS motto, updated logo « Result #6 on Aug 28, 2008, 11:03am »
We (the Board) are considering creating a new motto to replace "Great music . . . with no strings attached." This would be a permanent replacement, not just for the 10th anniversary.
Our motto needs to project who we are, what we are about, and what sets us apart. Granted, there's no research to show how well or badly or neutrally our current motto is working, which is why we are considering a change and not going ahead full-steam with it.
We need a motto that says more than just "we're a community band." We need to be the community band.
The idea of changing the motto came out during discussions with John Glennon, who, for his final exam for a Master's-level music administration class, did some research and analyzed our overall marketing strategy. ------- Also, since this is our 10th anniversary season, we would like to gussy up our logo to announce this anniversary season. If anyone has some mad (or just angry) graphics skills and would like to take a shot, I can send you a JPG of the logo. It will need to look good in black and white for the program, and we'll need it to be finished by the Monday before our first concert so I can actually get it ON the program.
The good part about this type of fundraiser is that it isn't very limited. There's no minimum amount that we have to sell, and people can order online and we get 30% of the profit. this might be something we can just set up and let go. (My parents get Schwann stuff all the time, and I know they'd be more than happy to order online and get the IWS some more fundage. They may be many others in the same boat.)
The fundraising committee will be meeting in April, and I'll bring this up with them then.

Mike's Car Wash has a great fundraiser, but we would have to book it a few months ahead of time. The earliest we could do it is June, which is after our season ends, making it a logistical nightmare. I think we should shoot for September.
The basic idea is that we buy a certain number of Mike's Carwash coupons (which they print up with our name and logo), and we get a month to sell them at face value. At the end of the month, we return any unused coupons and pay a little more than half of the face value of the ones we sold.
We only get a calendar month, so if we can have them ready by the first rehearsal and available at our first concert, I think these could bring in a lot more money than the Marsh and Kroger cards.

If you come up with or hear about any ideas to get our name out there or to get more butts in seats, you can post them here.
I think Carl had a great idea at the last board meeting: When we send out our targetted fundraising mailing, ask the potential donor to send (with their donation) the name of a piece that they would like us to play.
We certainly couldn't play all the requests, but if we did, we could include the donor's name in the program as a "requested by" or something. This gets our donors and potential donors more involved in the whole process...
